Course content

  • Identify 3 hidden costs to the food budget
  • Explain the difference between Use by dates and Best before dates on packaged food.
  • Identify two different ways of avoiding food waste
  • Prepare and cook a tasty meal on a budget
  • Plan, prepare and make a dish based on ‘left-overs


The purpose of this course is to enable learners to plan and prepare healthy, tasty meals on a budget, avoiding waste and encouraging the use of less highly processed foods.


Course content:

This course will consist of a mixture of theory and practical application, looking at how to extend and bulk out meals, how to create satisfying healthy and tasty meals on a budget, how to safely store and reuse ‘left-overs’, and how to use edible foods that are often discarded and thrown away.

Be able to attend the weekly sessions, please bring an apron
