Creative Textiles – Introduction to Boro

Course content

  • 1. Understand the origins and ethos of boro
  • 2. Demonstrate the preparation of a skein of sashiko thread
  • 3. Demonstrate the use of a ring thimble
  • 4. Develop skills in working the Japanese stitching technique
  • 5. Be creative in the use of fabric


Inspired by boro (Japanese fabrics which have been mended or patched together), this course draws on a Japanese hand sewing technique which prolongs the life of textiles. During the course you will create your own boro inspired item.

Course content:

Build basic skills in hand stitching using the Japanese technique, including how to prepare the thread, how to hold the needle and how to offer up the fabric.

You will be taught the background to boro and use this ethos to create your own boro inspired item.
