Course content

  • 1. Explain what is meant by Makaton Approaches to Safeguarding and describe how these link to existing safeguarding policy.
  • 2. Describe why the principles and approaches must be adapted to meet individual needs of Makaton users.
  • 3. List at least 5 factors that can affect the approach and vocabulary needed.
  • 4. Demonstrate and use a variety of everyday signs and symbols; people; body parts; clothing; places; feelings; thoughts and behaviours; bullying and abuse; private and sexual vocabulary
  • 5. Discuss strategies and methods within the Makaton programme that help to understand complex topics such as thoughts, feelings, behaviour, abuse, relationships, puberty etc. within a safeguarding context

Description

This workshop provides a more detailed application of Makaton in a safeguarding context and combines a practical approach with theory and technical information and is suitable for using within the workplace.

Course content:

300 Makaton signs and symbols.

Workshops on Safeguarding Policy, Person Centred Planning, Teaching abstract concepts using Makaton, teaching relationships and intimate matters using Makaton and ways of developing communication in a curriculum.

Requirements

  • At least Level 2 Makaton (or the old beginners/founcation levels)

What do I need to do this course?

Access to the Internet and use of a laptop or tablet and use of TEAMS. The ability to send an email and search for information on the internet.

Be able to attend the online session each week.

You will be given a book of the signs and all manuals/ handouts

Teaching Methods

  • PowerPoint, verbal, DVDs, games, sign practice and discussions, symbol exercises.

    Ongoing throughout the course by practical signing activities and discussions
