Course content

  • Learning how to administer first aid in a variety of situations, such as helping someone who is choking, bleeding, or has a shock.
  • CPR and use of an AED – Learning how to perform CPR and use an AED on a casualty who has stopped breathing.
  • Minor injuries- Learning how to provide first aid for minor injuries, such as cuts, grazes, bruises, burns, and scald.
  • First aider roles and responsibilities- Understanding the role of a first aider, including record keeping, and equipment.
  • Assessing a casualty- Learning how to assess an unconscious casualty, including those with a suspected spinal injury.

About Course

The Paediatric First Aid (12 hours) is ideal for anyone who works in an early years setting such as nursery, school and childminder, or those wanting to gain more knowledge and skills in Paediatric First Aid. This qualification is written in line with EYFS framework and is Ofsted compliant.

Course content:

This course involves a mix of theory and practical learning through a range of learning methods such as a presentation, images and videos, practical elements and group discussions.

The full course content is:

  • Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby or child who is choking
  • Help a baby or child who is bleeding
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock)
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with a head, neck or back injuries
  • Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
  • Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
  • Help a baby or child with an eye injury
  • Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold

Requirements

    There are some prerequisites for Paediatric First Aid courses, including:

    • Age: You must be at least 19 years old to take the course.
    • Physical ability: You must be physically able to perform the procedures required to meet HSE assessment criteria, current practice and the criteria set by the Awarding Organisation.
    • English language: Some courses require a basic command of English, typically at a Level 2 level.


    The learner does not need any prior First Aid knowledge and there is no initial assessment before the course place is confirmed.
