  • Define what is meant by ‘autism’
  • Describe key features of a person-centred approach to individuals with autism
  • Identify some of the delays in speech, language and social development that can occur with individuals with autism
  • List ways to support positive behaviour and the development of coping strategies
  • Outline how our understanding of autism has developed over the last 30+ years

Description

This one-day course will look at the typical signs and symptoms associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, its possible causes and potential therapies/management. All those interested are encouraged to come along; no previous knowledge is necessary.

Course content:

In addition to the summary above, there we will cover the history of autism as a diagnosis, as well as some new approaches to understanding the condition. Note that the course focusses on understanding autism rather than on practical care issues.
