About Course

Most people are neurotypical, meaning their brains function in the way that society expects. However, an estimated 15–20% of the world’s population is neurodivergent, meaning their brains function differently. This course is designed to provide awareness to the learner of Neurodivergent conditions and the best way to support people with these conditions.

Course content:

In the first session we will have an overview of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism and Down Syndrome looking at the main symptoms, subtypes and diagnostic criteria. We will also be exploring what classification is, how assessment happens in the UK and how the conditions are diagnosed.

In the second session we will explore theories of Down Syndrome, ADHD and Autism and scepticism towards the latter two conditions. We will also explore the main issues surrounding comorbidity in all three conditions and what the overlap of symptoms might suggest.

In the third session we will look at the main issues surrounding treatment for Autism, ADHD and Down Syndrome focusing on medication, behavioural interventions other treatments and problems with treatment as well as parent advocacy groups and prognosis amongst others
