This Extended Award can be followed for interest in its own right, or as the first step towards exploring a career in Child Care. The focus of this course will be on understanding key principles of child development. There will units on Social and Emotional Development, Intellectual and Language Development and The Importance of Play.
The course comprises three units:
1. Social and Emotional Development
2. Intellectual and Language Development
3. The Importance of Play.
The course content has been designed so that students gain underpinning knowledge about child development which will be useful for further vocational studies or higher level academic study.
This is course is at Level 1. No prior knowledge is expected but basic written skills will be required – if you have any concerns about this, please discuss with Reception.
An interest in the subject and a willingness to complete the assessed work.
You need to bring paper and pen with you to the sessions and may like to get a ring binder to keep your work organised. Access to the internet would also be useful – this is possible in the learning centre, if required.
The course is classroom-based and will comprise a mix of tutor input, use of video material, practical activities, group discussion and individual homework tasks.
You will receive informal feedback regularly during the course of the sessions and homework will be undertaken each week which will be marked by the tutor.

· GCSE or A Level Psychology
· Access to Higher Education Diplomas
· Work with children and young people.
Some of the options above may require additional qualifications or experience but the Level 1 course does provide a good basis for these progression opportunities.
