About Course

This introductory Counselling Skills course helps learners understand how counselling differs from other helping roles, the importance of research, and key aspects of professionalism and ethics—through interactive tasks and group activities.

Course content:

  • Discuss and identify the difference between the roles Wellbeing/Mental Health Champions, GP, Counsellor, Psychologist and Psychiatrist.
  • Identify and explore the three main streams of Psychology that underpin counselling theory- Cognitive/Psychodynamic/Humanistic.
  • Explore what counselling theory is and why it is important.
  • Consider why counselling research is important to ensuring effective practice.
  • Give feedback and reflect on the use of counselling skills within a counselling roleplay session.

Learners will require access to a suitable computer device.

Learners will need an appropriate internet bandwith to engage in Teams efficiently.

Learners will need a headset to ensure confidentiality during practice sessions.

Teaching Methods

  • This course will take place online and consist of 2x 4 hour sessions.

    Learning will be continually monitored throughout the two sessions via the engagement in lesson discussion and quality of the activities completed.
