About Course
Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level to Level 2)
Build your maths skills, boost your confidence and gain a nationally recognised qualification.
Whether you are looking to improve your everyday maths, progress into employment, access further education or simply build your confidence, our Functional Skills Maths courses are designed to support you every step of the way.
Before joining a class, you will complete a short online initial assessment to help us identify your current level. This assessment can be completed from home or at one of our centres, and helps ensure you are placed in the group that is right for you.
Once your level has been established, yo will be allocated to one of our supportive learning groups:
- Morning Group: 9am to 12pm
- Afternoon Group: 1pm to 4pm
We understand that everyone learns differently, so we aim to be as flexible as possible and will always work with you to find the best option for your needs.
Throughout the course, you will receive plenty of support from our experienced tutor, helping you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed. When you are ready, you will complete a Functional Skills Maths assessment and, upon successful completion, achieve a nationally recognised qualification.
This course is ideal if you want to:

Course content:
Topics covered on the functional skills syllabus include, depending on the level: understanding the relationship between numbers and ratio, fractions, decimals, percentages and calculations. 2D and 3D shapes are covered, including calculating perimeter, area, volume and investigating angles. Data handing skills are developed and learners will be able to present data in a number of different ways, such as line graphs and bar charts. Time (from minutes up to years) are covered to ensure learners are confident in telling the time and working with timings in a practical manner.

- Geometry set (protractor and pair of compasses)
- Calculator - it must not have a graph function

Teaching Methods
The course will be delivered online via Teams. There will be a mix of learning through discovery by exploring tasks, direct input, demonstrations, worked examples, group discussion and practice questions. Resources will be available to all learners each week.
How is your progress checked?
During each session, the tutor will assess understanding through listening / observing and questioning. Homework will also provide information on learner progress and there will be regular ‘pulse tests’ to assess retained understanding under exam conditions.
Towards the end of the course, there will be practice exam papers given and revision tailored to the learners.
Extra study or practice required at home.
There will be homework set every week; this could include:
- Practice questions or worksheets
- Online tasks
- Self-study of a new topic
- Revision
