Understanding wildlife and habitats

This 9-hour programme introduces learners to wildlife, habitats, biodiversity, and practical conservation action. It combines classroom discussion, outdoor observation, habitat surveying, creative group work, and reflection.

Course content:

• Introduction to habitats, including what a habitat is and how different habitats provide food, shelter, water and space for wildlife survival.
• Exploration of biodiversity and how plants, animals, people and places are connected through simple examples and group discussion.
• Identification of at least three UK habitats, such as woodland, grassland, wetland, hedgerow or urban green space, and examples of wildlife commonly found in each.
• Practical outdoor observation activity using a simple habitat survey to record features, wildlife signs and learner observations.
• Discussion of human impacts on habitats, followed by planning realistic local actions learners could take to protect or improve wildlife habitats.
